About FRTAB

As Friends of the Royal Textile Academy (FRTAB), we are dedicated to the preservation and advancement of Bhutan’s greatest textile treasures and to the people who weave them.

The textile arts are deeply woven into every aspect of Bhutanese life. In a rapidly globalizing world, FRTAB is committed to sustaining and celebrating the eloquent traditions of this ancient culture.

We serve as philanthropic partners to the Royal Textile Academy (RTA), inspiring individuals, foundations, governments, and corporations to value and support the revitalization of Bhutanese textiles and textile traditions. The pillars of our support for this irreplaceable world heritage are education, conservation, preservation, training, and economic development for the predominantly women weavers.

FRTAB promotes understanding and appreciation of Bhutan’s textiles by providing support and making grants for the benefit of the RTA, which was established as a National Trust in 2005. As a result of FRTAB support, the RTA is now home to a state-of-the-art textile museum; a school and conservation center for weavers and conservators; an administrative center; and a nearly-completed conference center which will gather citizens, textile enthusiasts, business innovators, and international tourists drawn to the natural beauty of Bhutan.

We invite you to become a Friend, and to join us in sustaining and advancing one of the world’s most ancient and vibrant art forms.
